Our History

Abba’s Family is a 501 (c) (3) established in Tulsa in 2007. Initially, its core design was established to assist faith communities and the larger community with how to effectively outreach homeless mentally ill adults, including veterans. This mobile outreach and crisis service would respond within minutes of a request anywhere in the community. Staff included a psychiatrist (MD), two nurses (RN's), three masters level clinicians (LCSW & LMFT) and 5 assertive case managers (BA, BS, etc). The team would continuously maintain contact from outreach, inpatient/outpatient care, substance abuse services, and permanent housing. The team worked closely with all entities where frequent contact took place. This included law enforcement, the courts, neighborhood associations, local hospitals, college campuses, eateries, etc. When successful, clients would establish full community inclusion and create for themselves a life of purpose, optimal well being and self sufficiency. They would join their clinical teams and others at a later time to assist the community to end homelessness one person at a time. It was a requirement for all staff to demonstrate the capacity to establish healthy relationships.

In 2015, the project relocated to the Tahlequah, Ok and responded only in Cherokee County. The project later worked exclusively with housing providers, faith communities, and those with a history of homelessness and psychiatric diagnosis. Volunteers and participants utilized the resources of historical Christianity to establish and maintain a life of personal transformation. A training curriculum for staff, clients, community volunteers (mostly from the faith communities) and students from local colleges who were completing a practicum placement. It provided a cost savings for the police by interrupting repeated patterns of emergency detention and hospitalization.
